In August, rising college seniors from the BTE New Brunswick Pathways cohort participated in a mini summer institute focused on post-graduation planning. As the students approach their final year, set to conclude in May 2025, the institute offered essential tools and strategies for navigating life after graduation. Career Focused Solutions facilitated this event at East Brunswick Public Library, highlighting key aspects of preparation and proactive planning, providing participants with a roadmap for transitioning into their careers.

The session opened with an exploration of post-undergraduate opportunities, including continuing education, certifications, licensing, and specialized courses that could enhance their qualifications. Students discussed graduate school options, assessing whether advanced education aligns with their career goals. Facilitators emphasized the importance of professional development, with discussions on how workshops, Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), and upskilling can help Pathways participants stay competitive in their respective fields. The institute highlighted skill development, encouraging participants to self-assess their current strengths, identify gaps, and explore in-demand skills for their respective fields. They also explored future skills predicted to be essential by 2025, according to the World Economic Forum. A decision-making matrix exercise helped students map out their priorities, providing them with a framework to guide their post-graduate planning.

Incorporating artificial intelligence into the discussion, students engaged in AI prompt practice, learning how to craft customized instructions and create a library of prompts that could assist them in various professional tasks. This exploration of AI’s potential in the workplace prepared the students to integrate technology into their career development.

The session also explored personal and professional behaviors that contribute to success. Students learned about the importance of asking thoughtful questions, accepting feedback, and establishing productive routines in their daily lives. Personal branding, which included mastering the art of small talk and email communication, was highlighted as an essential part of navigating professional environments. In terms of professional development, participants explored ways to craft a compelling personal tagline, honing their storytelling skills, and understanding the value of being proactive in their careers.

Overall, the post-graduate planning mini summer institute provided the participants with actionable steps and a comprehensive guide for their transition after college. As these students approach graduation next year, they are well-prepared to make informed decisions and confidently face their future careers.
